Spanish and canarian long distance championships
Thomas Hellriegel wins and Maribel repeats as Champion of both the Ironman Canarias Lanzarote Triathlonand the Spanish Long Distance Triathlon.

598 triathletes from 30 different countries  entered the Atlantic ocean at 7.00 a.m. this morning. 535 finished before midnight – time limit to be an official Ironman.

The Argentines were the first to come out of the water: Francisco Pontano in 51: 04:50 and Verónica Avene in 56:09:50 followed by the French Christophe Hamard (men) and as to the women, Madrid's Maribel Blanco, the defending female champion. Very soon though the Germans took the lead of the bike: Thomas Hellriegel followed by the Estonian Litovtsenko and Spanish Félix Martínez, and Ute Schaefer in front of Maribel and Liz Vitai. Little by little, the German girl would increase her lead, and Thomas maintain his'. But during the run, Thomas's job became quite harder - Félix Martínez even managed to pass him at one stage, though only for a small period of time. Finally, Thomas Hellriegel was crowned Ironman Canarias Lanzarote Triathlon Champion again, in front of Kiril Litovtsenko and Félix Martínez who finished third.

Maribel Blanco quite easily overtook Ute Schaefer on the run course and progressively increased the distance, crossing the finish line FIRST in a time of 10:29:50. Ute Schaefer came in second, more than 8 minutes later.
