Nico Ward Muñoz is one of the more than 1000 participants in this year’s Ironman Lanzarote. This athlete with the British nationality lives on the island of Lanzarote and works in the Rent a Car Office at Club La Santa. Sometimes, he works a little extra in the bike centre or the fitness centre. This 24-year-old member of the Costa Teguise Triathlon Club has a special goal which is also his biggest dream: one day he dreams to win a future Ironman Lanzarote.

Nico actually already finished the Ironman Lanzarote in 2002, when he was 20 years old, and then, being almost the youngest participant he set a time of 11 hours and 11 minutes. Before that, he had already been active in the Ironman as a volunteer and he continued doing this; assist the organization and feel the deep emotions this magnificent event causes. His goals for 2006 are to finish within 10 hours and to compete some long and middle distance triathlons at a good level. On his schedule of important races for this year, we see the Volcano Triathlon (6 th May), the Middle Distance British Championships in July and the Long Distance Championships in Denmark and Spain, respectively held in August and July. Besides these events, we will find him in many other races, whether local, national or international ones, all this together with the Costa Teguise Triathlon Club.

Since 1998 he has participated in many races. In that year, he gained two 3 rd places in marathons on the island and after that, many top 3 places followed: he took part in cycling races, running races, duathlons, marathons, aquathlons and also races like the Ridge Run and the Volcano Triathlon, organized by Club La Santa. His most recent success was at the Club La Santa International Duathlon in January where he finished 10 th overall and first Lanzarote resident.

However, long distance triathlon means a lot of training if you want to improve your results: triathlon training determines Nico’s actual lifestyle completely. His programs are controlled by Phil Price, former coach of the National Welsh Triathlon Team and current manager of the Test Centre of Club La Santa. Most of the swimming, running and gym trainings take place at Club la Santa and its surroundings and the cycling training is around all the roads of the island.

By doing almost all his training sessions at Club la Santa, Nico is lucky because he has the chance to work together with elite triathletes from all over the world when they come to Lanzarote to do their training. A big part of his daily lifestyle consists of talking, training, having fun and making new friends all the time.

Maybe he will manage to increase his racing level and one day be able to compete at a professional level (in 2-3 years?) We wish him all the luck to achieve all his goals and dreams!!
