XV Ironman Lanzarote Canarias Triathlon…
next 20 May

Today it’s 740 athletes who have registered already….

Thomas Hellriegel has also confirmed his entry. This man already won our race twice, and still has the race record! (1995 – 8:35:37)

In 1995 and 2003 he won Ironman Lanzarote and in 1997, the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.

Thomas just left Club La Santa after 3 weeks training but will be back by the end of this month, whilst the Belgian triathletes Luc Van Lierde, Ironman Hawaii Champion 1996 & 1999 is back here, also training for 20 May, as is the French 2002 ITU World Champion Cyrille Neveu.

And this morning, after his swim training, the also Belgian Marc Herremans officially registered for our Ironman Lanzarote 2006.

Marc Herremans with Dirk Van Gossum - Winner Ironman Lanzarote 2000

In 2001 Marc Herremans finished Hawaii in the 6 th position. He was a big hope for the Belgian Triathlon and hoping to win Hawaii the following year. When he came to Lanzarote for his annual training, also preparing for the Lanzarote race, he suffered an accident.

Marc fell from his bike when riding down to Haria on 28 January 2002, and since has had to use a wheelchair.

Far from giving up, Marc took his destiny in his hands and looked for sports and adventure in his life.

As he says on his website: “ Three months after my accident, adventure entered my life again. I performed a parachute jump from a height of 13.123,36 feet . 8 months after the accident I participated in Hawaii again, wrote a book, started the TO WALK AGAIN foundation, cooperated in TV-programs for vt4 (Belgian commercial television), did some work for the minister of Sports, met Christopher Reeve, gave some motivation speeches for schools and companies, visited other people with severe problems, wrote columns for ‘Gazet van Antwerpen' (a Belgian newspaper) and finished the Iron Man in 2003 and 2004 as a wheelchair athlete. The game I once wanted to win as a professional athlete, I could not win anymore. But finishing the game on my arms was my new goal.

I'ts all in the mind and Nothing is impossible
So
Keep the spirit
Never give up
and ENJOY LIFE

Marc has decided to take a new challenge and race the Ironman Lanzarote, the toughest Ironman course in the World!

Presently training at Club La Santa with former Lanzarote winner Dirk Van Gossum, his training partner, Marc will be on the island until 15 February, and then back for 20 May!!

So, Welcome, Marc! We wish you all the best of luck and strength!
