PRE-RACE MEETING
The pre-race meeting is mandatory for all competitors. It will take place at the square at Club La Santa, Thursday, May22.

PENALTY RULES & EXECUTION
We have yellow cards for warning and red cards for disqualification. Generally being warned twice means being disqualified, but race marshals might as well disqualify directly. On the bike course a warned athletes will get a time penalty and will have to stay 6 minutes in a penalty box in the transition zone. The race marshal will show the yellow to the athletes and make sure he/she has realized he/she got a penalty! The marshal will always be moving, there is no stop and go rule. On the run the race marshal will warn the athlete. In case it is a second warning, it results in disqualification. Read more under the two sections BIKE COURSE and RUN COURSE.

ANTIDOPING CONTROL

IDTM, International Doping Tests and Management, a company specialised in antidoping controls, will be in charge of the antidoping control at Ironman Lanzarote Canarias Triathlon (www.idtm.com)

New start of Ironman Lanzarote Swim:
The start procedure for Ironman Lanzarote will be the same as in 2007.

Ironman Lanzarote 2008 start procedure:

We will have ONE START, so all athletes will have the same start time.

We will divide the beach in 3 sections.

In front of the beach the PRO athletes.

Behind the GREEN Club La Santa start tower ONLY swimmers who expect their swimming time to be UNDER 65 minutes.

Behind the YELLOW Club La Santa start tower all other swimmers who would like to have a safer and quieter swim start.

Select the correct swim group to suit your pace.

Swim start is at 07.00. Swim cut off time is 09.20. Participants who are still in the water at this time will not be permitted to continue the race. The swim is a 2-lap course - and after the first lap you will have to run approx. 10 meters on the beach. The swim caps provided by the Ironman Lanzarote Canarias Triathlon organisation must be used. After the swim you are not allowed to throw the swim cap on the beach - put it in your bike bag in the dressing tent. Swim goggles must be worn. No individual paddlers or escorts are allowed on the swim course. Surfboards, kayaks and patrol boats will adequately patrol the swim course. Athletes who do not stick to the swim course will be disqualified. See advice before you start the Ironman swim:

  1. Try to relax and visualise the swim segment - don’t start without
    thinking about your race plan.
  2. Ensure that you have the numbered swim cap provided to you at
registration and check (replace) your goggle strap.
  3. If you are not a pro athlete (and therefore starting ahead of the
main field) try to consider your starting position. (E.g. stronger
swimmers to the front, weaker swimmers towards the back).
  4. At the turns do not swim too close to the buoys where you could
    get crushed by other swimmers.
  5. There is often a current in Playa Grande Bay, which you will feel
    - you’ll usually find it helpful!
  6. As you exit the water at the end of your first lap, use the opportunity
to enjoy the atmosphere and the sound of the spectators.
  7. As you exit the water, ensure you still have your champiochip in
place ahead of passing the timing mats.
  8. If you have any problems during the swim, simply signal to the
rescue boats that will come and assist you.

The organisers will provide all necessary race course information from the information centre, and therefore it is the individual athlete’s responsibility to be familiar with the swim course.

TRANSITION FROM SWIM TO BIKE
When coming out of the water after the second lap, every athlete must pass the timing mat connected to the timing box, where the ChampionChip automatically will record your time. This will not only secure a split time for the swim, but it also serves as a security measure designed to maintain an accurate count of swimmers in and out of the water. Wetsuits and swim caps must not be left or thrown on the beach - you must put them in the bike bag, once you are in the changing area tent. In the bag pick-up area, each athlete must pick up his/her own bag. Volunteers are not available for this purpose. No undressing or dressing is allowed on the beach - this must take place inside the dressing tent. You are, however, allowed to remove your wetsuit while showering. Nudity outside the dressing tent is prohibited and will lead to disqualification. You must pack all your swim gear in your designated bike bag and make sure the bag is properly closed and bring it with you outside the tent and hand it to a volunteer. Participants who do not bring out their bag of the dressing tent will be asked to go back and get it. We highly recommend that everyone accept the application of sunscreen from the volunteers in the dressing tent. The sun here on Lanzarote is very strong and can result in serious sunburn. Take care!
The organisers cannot be responsible for any equipment lost in the transition area. You are not permitted to jump over or cross bike racks during the transition. Bike helmet must be put on before removing the bike from the rack. You are not permitted to deposit anything on the ground next to your bike. Biking in the transition area is not allowed and will be the subject of a yellow card penalty. No assistance, other than that from official volunteers, is allowed during the transition.
