Virginia Berasategui Luna and Ain-Alar Juhanson this year's winners of the Ironman Lanzarote 2005!

Saturday, 21st May, the Ironman Lanzarote 2005, known as the toughest one in the world, took place.

The race started at 7 am in Puerto del Carmen, 803 participants from 33 countries had registered; among them, 60 were women. From the beginning of the race one of them, the Spanish Virginia Berasategui Luna leaded the women's race. Starting the bike race she was the 12th person overall.
The athletes were having a hard time on the course because of some strong winds.  On the bike course in the men's race Pontano Roldan and the two Llanos Burguera brothers were riding in close proximity. Later Steffen Liebetrau was in front as the riders went passed "the camels" at the Fire Mountains. Through Mancha Blanca, he was 3:30 up on Ain-Alar Juhanson, who was closely followed by Felix Martinez Rubio and Pontano Roldan.
Unfortunately Felix Martinez Rubio crashed on the way from Tinajo down to Club La Santa and was out on the race. Later on also the two Llanos-brothers had to give up on the race due to some stomach problems of one of them.

During the run course Virginia Berasategui Luna still continued being the leader of the women. Ain-Alar Juhanson started 5:31 behind Steffen Liebetrau. Through the halfway point of the marathon, Ain-Alar Juhanson had gained a lot of time on Liebetrau, but remained 1:28 behind the German. Meanwhile, behind them both, the Belgium Gerrit Schellens was flying and coming fast!

The German Andrea Brede went through the first loop of the run course in second place behind Virginia. After 8:31 hours Ain-Alar Juhanson passed Liebetrau and gained the lead and became the first to pass the finish line in a time of 08:55:37. For the second year in a row Steffen Liebetrau has finished second at Ironman Lanzarote just about two minutes behind Ain-Alar Juhanson. (08:57:09). The third to came in was Gerrit Schellens in a time of 08:59:23. They were all so close.

Virginia Berasategui Luna won another time the Ironman Lanzarote championship, but did it in a time almost a half hour slower than a year ago. She is the champion, though and it was another impressive win. A great second place gained the German Andrea Brede. The Scottish Louisa Edmonston who made her Ironman debut came across the finish line in third place, an impressive result.

Although some participants had to give up during the race, all the participants of this year deserve full respect for their efforts and we hope to have as many participants during the race next year! Thanks to you all!
