Press release:
Club La Santa, 4th March 2005
It is with great sorrow that we heard about Randy Caddell’s accident and death in Kona last 25th February, whilst he was training.
We will all remember him here on the island, where he came to race our Ironman Lanzarote 1999 and crossed the finish line only 32 seconds before midnight and race cut-off time.
Next day, he celebrated long and lively his new Ironman Lanzarote title, making many friends who will never forget him.
Randy was only 37 years old when he left us.
But he definitely impressed us all, and we will never forget either how he explained us about his handicap and having to sit and race in his wheelchair… because of a motorbike accident, related to alcohol, at the age of 19…. How this happening had changed his life drastically, not only physically but mainly mentally… How he had been a frustrated raging young man before that accident… How much he had changed afterwards… How he had started running in a hand cycle, and then fell in love with triathlon… how he had found so many goals in life…
Not surprising he spent much time and energy to talk to school children about the dangers of alcohol and driving…
Randy had many friends on Lanzarote, and especially at Club La Santa and within the Ironman Lanzarote organisation.
We will miss you, Randy!
