Press release:

Maribel Blanco retires from elite triathlon!
After winning Ironman Lanzarote for the second time, Maribel Blanco announced during the awards ceremony Sunday night, amid all the athletes, sponsors, organization and authorities, including the Spanish Triathlon Federation President, that she leaves the elite sport of triathlon.

She explained that she has decided to give her life a new direction, hoping to find a way to remain in touch with triathlon as a coach or adviser, not as a pro or elite athlete though.

Winning this Lanzarote race has been the best way to put a an end to her marvellous career even if her fans did believe it was only the start of an even huger one. Maribel Blanco said she feels fully in peace with herself and with triathlon: she has dedicated a lot to the sport and has received another lot – the balance is perfect.

She was looking for the right way to finish her career with a victory and the more Lanzarote was getting closer, the more she could feel this would be the right moment – and indeed, she managed to cross the finish line first, thus making her decision come true: she has got the crown and retires from triathlon.

The Ironman Canarias Lanzarote Triathlon organisation and Club La Santa wish Maribel, our two times champion, all the best in her new life.
